Subject choice assessment

What Is a Subject Choice Assessment?

A subject choice assessment is a psychometric evaluation designed to assist grade 9 students in making well-informed decisions about which subjects to select for their studies during grades 10-12.

The Significance of Subject Choice Assessment

The subject choice assessment is of great importance. It empowers students to decide on their subjects for the last three years of high school. Additionally, it helps them make decisions about their potential career paths after graduation. These choices significantly influence their future job satisfaction.

At the age of grade 9, students are still in the adolescent phase of development, often without a firm career direction. This makes the assessment even more valuable for these learners. The information gathered from the assessment helps students identify their strengths, values, and personality traits. Combined with psychological analysis, this information guides them towards a range of potential career fields they are likely to find interesting when they reach grade 12.

Drawbacks of Choosing the Wrong Subjects

The majority of our waking hours are spent at work, and thus, our careers should ideally bring meaning and joy to our lives. Research has shown that individuals who are unhappy in their jobs are more susceptible to mental and physical health risks compared to those who are content with their careers.

Certain students may only uncover their genuine career ambitions in grades 11 or 12. However, they could face obstacles in pursuing these aspirations due to their initial subject choices. This assessment helps mitigate this risk and ensures that students are well-prepared to pursue fulfilling careers in their young adulthood.

When Should You Conduct a Subject Choice Assessment?

The ideal time to undergo a subject choice assessment is towards the end of grade 9, in preparation for grade 10. Some schools and the Department of Basic Education allow students to change up to two subjects in grades 10 and 11. While this situation is not ideal, it does have its merits. It does, however, place the responsibility of catching up on missed work on the students. This presents an opportunity for students to consider and implement the necessary adjustments to their subjects.

We encourage students in grades 10 and 11 who feel that their subjects are not suitable for them to consider a subject choice assessment.

The Subject Choice Assessment Process

Subject choice assessments can be conducted through two methods, namely online and in person. To complete it online you will require a stable internet connection. For in-person subject choice assessment, you can visit either our Boksburg or Pretoria offices.

The assessment occurs in three stages within a time frame of 2-3 weeks:

  1. Intake Interview – This takes approximately 30-45 minutes.
  2. Assessment – A more comprehensive evaluation lasting 2-3 hours.
  3. Feedback – A 6-minute session, with a written report provided afterward

Conclusion

In conclusion, subject choice assessments serve as invaluable tools in guiding high school students. It helps them make informed decisions about their academic and future career paths. By assessing their strengths, values, and personalities, these assessments pave the way for fulfilling and meaningful careers. Ultimately, they contribute to students’ long-term happiness and well-being.
